In alignment with the spirit of a Franciscan prayer that encourages the embrace of “enough foolishness” to effect meaningful change, Tribe Impact Consulting boldly entered the social enterprise arena. Undeterred by scepticism and discouragement, the organisation pioneered accredited learnerships in rural and township areas, specifically tailored for young adults grappling with frequently overlooked intellectual or learning disabilities.
In the face of opposition and being dismissed as impractical, the organisation took the bold step of establishing its accredited training company. With the support of two like-minded clients, Tribe Impact Consulting embarked on a groundbreaking journey, initiating the first-ever Hygiene and Cleaning Learnership for 80 young adults with intellectual disabilities, primarily dyslexia, in townships in Umlazi (KZN), Diepsloot, Refilwe, Tembisa (Johannesburg) and Olievenhoutbosch (Tswane).
Tribe Impact Consulting’s learnerships are meticulously designed to foster both hard and soft skills for people with intellectual disabilities (PWID) and to enhance performance and self-esteem. Through comprehensive training encompassing assertiveness, communication, English language usage in a business environment, basic computer skills, workplace readiness, and exposure to various industries, the organisation diligently prepares PWID for gainful employment.
Tribe Impact Consulting steadfastly challenges stereotypes and firmly believes in the untapped potential of high-functioning PWID, advocating for their meaningful inclusion in the workforce. The organisation’s approach not only addresses the profound social impact of intellectual disabilities but also contributes to economic sustainability by showcasing the cost-effectiveness of employing individuals with intellectual disabilities.
