FINALIST: Health Care Services Are Developed With The Community, Rather Than For Them.

The Missionvale Care Centre is an oasis in the middle of one of Gqeberha’s poorest areas. It offers educational, skills development and health care services developed with the community, rather than for them. The emphasis is on upliftment, development and empowerment. Love radiates throughout and can be felt in every nook and cranny of the Centre.

They have created an exchange system whereby community members volunteer by bringing in material for recycling, offering their time and skill or attending educational programmes. The members receive MCC tokens which are exchanged for food, clothing and other essential household items.

Sabrina Lambers is the General Manager. She joined in 2016 and is affectionately known by the staff and community as “the mother”. She has been instrumental in implementing powerful changes in their approach to dealing with the challenges faced by poverty-stricken communities.

She navigated the shift from welfare to empowerment with love and excellence and the results have been truly remarkable! Sabrina has followed in the footsteps of their iconic and beloved founder, Sr Ethel Normoyle, who is undoubtedly smiling from heaven.
