When we the team and I were putting together this issue – it was right in the middle of the Covid-19 Storm. We were under extreme lockdown and deaths was happening by the thousands. In the midst of this health chaos – we realized that schools had to function, matrics were going to write their exams no matter how chaotic the situation around us was.
We conceptualized to talk to the top most principals of South Africa – targeting the leaders in Education. Whilst in the midst of this planning process – Charlotte Maxeke hospital burnt down right in the middle of the Covid-19 storm. And when we were about to begin our engagement with South Africa’s top principals – the university of Cape Town known as UCT’s library burnt down.
We were caught in a catch of health and education and as an oragnisations that deals in the sector we wre pulled from pillar to post. We soldiered on and manage to interview a number of top principals of otherwise known as Vice Chancellors. We were more lucky to be able to interview professor Phakeng the front runner of UCT – the Vice Chancellor – who was right in the middle of the storm of the library burning down.
We were excited to get the exllusive of this story – it is the first story that you will see in this issue. We futher interview leading professors from Stellenbosch, Free State University, UNISA, Nortwest University.
In this issue we explored the future of education and what that will look like for the matric class of 2020 through 2022. We than we putting measures in place to see how by 2030 our efforts can help cushion the learners that will come out of the end of this journey.
We are all aware of the fact that we are sitting at around 74% youth unemployment in South Africa – I believe the highest youth unemployment figure in the world. This means that countries like Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Malawi and the likes are above us.
This surely must be something that we as CSI South Africa will be working so that we can eradicate.
