In South Africa, the Matric Preliminary exams are a crucial milestone for high school learners, particularly those from disadvantaged communities. These exams serve as a vital practice run for the final Matric exams, providing learners with an invaluable opportunity to assess their knowledge and identify areas for improvement. For many young people, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, the pressure to perform well can be immense. Without proper support, they may find it challenging to reach their full potential. Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives play a pivotal role in helping these learners succeed during this critical period.
One of the most effective ways CSI initiatives support learners during the Matric Prelims is by providing them with the necessary study materials. Many schools in impoverished areas lack the resources to equip their learners with up-to-date textbooks, past exam papers, and other essential study aids. By supplying these materials, businesses help level the playing field. For instance, the Shoprite Group has, in the past, distributed study guides and past exam papers to schools in disadvantaged communities, empowering learners to prepare thoroughly for their exams.
Another key area where CSI can make a significant difference is by funding additional tutoring and revision classes. These sessions are invaluable in helping learners grasp complex concepts and address any knowledge gaps before the Matric Prelims. Companies such as Sasol have previously invested in weekend and holiday tutoring programmes for Matric learners, offering extra lessons in subjects like Mathematics and Science. These programmes provide learners with the additional support they need to boost their performance in the Matric Prelims and beyond.
CSI can also have a positive impact by creating conducive study environments. Many learners from less fortunate backgrounds live in overcrowded homes, making it difficult to find a quiet space to study, as the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed. CSI initiatives can fund the creation of study centres or libraries where learners can focus without distractions. For example, the Vodacom Foundation has, in the past, built and refurbished libraries in under-resourced schools, providing learners with safe and peaceful environments to prepare for their exams.
Nutrition is another crucial factor in a learner’s ability to perform well in exams. Hunger can significantly impair concentration and energy levels, making it difficult for learners to focus during their studies and exams. CSI programmes that provide meals to learners help address this issue. The Tiger Brands Foundation’s school nutrition programme is a prime example of how CSI can directly impact learners’ performance by ensuring they have the energy they need to study effectively.
Beyond academic and material support, CSI initiatives can also address the emotional and psychological well-being of Matric learners. The pressure of the Matric Prelims can be overwhelming, leading to anxiety, stress, and, in extreme cases, suicide. Some CSI programmes offer counselling and mental health support to help learners cope with the demands of the exam period. The Old Mutual Education Flagship Programme, for example, has supported projects that provide psychological support to Matric learners, helping them manage stress and build resilience during this challenging time.
Finally, CSI initiatives can assist learners with the transition from Matric to further education or employment. After the Matric Prelims, many learners start considering their options for the future. CSI programmes that offer career guidance, university application support, and job placement assistance can be invaluable. The FirstRand Foundation’s bursary programme not only provides financial support for higher education but also offers career counselling and work experience opportunities, helping learners navigate the next steps after their Matric.
The Matric Preliminary exams are a pivotal stage in a young person’s educational journey. For those from disadvantaged backgrounds, the challenges can be particularly daunting, but with the support of Corporate Social Investment initiatives, these learners can overcome the obstacles they face. By providing resources, academic support, and emotional guidance, CSI plays a crucial role in helping Matric learners achieve their full potential in their Matric Prelims and beyond. Through these efforts, businesses are not only supporting education; they are investing in the future of South Africa.
For example, one young woman I met while volunteering at a local study centre had overcome significant challenges to reach her Matric year. Living in a cramped township home with several siblings, she found it impossible to concentrate on her studies at home. Thanks to the support of a local charity, funded in part by a CSI initiative, she was able to access a quiet study space at the centre, where she received tutoring and mentoring. This support helped her to develop the confidence and skills she needed to succeed in her Matric Prelims and ultimately achieve her goal of attending university.
Stories like this highlight the transformative power of CSI initiatives in the lives of young people. By working together, businesses, charities, government, and communities can create a brighter future for all learners, regardless of their background.
We will appreciate to partner with you
I love your article, it took me back to a time when I was the project manager CSI for a company I used to work at. That CSI project only focused previously disadvantaged communities, focusing on learners from these rural communities.
These learners had so much potential it was always just about the “how” and we assisted in that. Providing study guides/ books, scientific calculators, funding towards study camps, stationary, food and sanitary packs for the girl learners to name a few.
CSI is one of the most fulfilling positions, there’s so much that can be done by corporates as all the little contributions not only change the life of that learner but eventually change a household and finally the community.
Thank you
