As South Africa marked thirty years of democracy, it’s evident that making a real difference requires collaboration. Tackling issues like poverty, inequality, and unemployment calls for collective action across various sectors. The upcoming CSI Legacy Conference aims to delve into how Corporate Social Investment (CSI) can effect long-term change through cooperative initiatives guided by a common vision. By fostering a sense of shared or collective responsibility, the conference will bring together corporate leaders, social investors, policymakers, and change-makers to re-imagine our approach to socioeconomic challenges as a united front.
Collective impact goes beyond individual efforts but encourages individual impact as long as they align with a shared or collective vision. It involves bringing together various sectors – business, government, civil society, and communities – around a common goal. This collaborative approach has the potential to drive significant change in the years ahead, creating comprehensive solutions for South Africa’s most pressing issues.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is a distinguished South African politician, activist, and global advocate for women’s rights. Born on 3 November 1955 in Claremont, Durban, South Africa, she has made a significant impact on the country’s political landscape and has played a crucial role on the global stage in advancing gender equality.
Mlambo-Ngcuka began her career as a teacher and social worker, dedicating herself to improving the lives of underprivileged communities during the apartheid era. She became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement and held various leadership roles in civil society organisations. Following the end of apartheid in 1994, she entered politics as a member of the African National Congress (ANC).
Her political career gained momentum when she was appointed Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry in Nelson Mandela’s government. She later served as the Minister of Minerals and Energy from 1999 to 2005, where she was instrumental in driving Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) initiatives and promoting sustainable development within the energy sector.
In 2005, Mlambo-Ngcuka made history by becoming South Africa’s first female Deputy President, a position she held until 2008. During her tenure, she focused on poverty alleviation, education, and the empowerment of women and girls.
Her influence extended beyond South Africa when, in 2013, she was appointed as the Executive Director of UN Women, a role she held until 2021. In this capacity, Mlambo-Ngcuka led global efforts to achieve gender equality and combat violence against women and girls.
Mlambo-Ngcuka’s legacy is defined by her steadfast commitment to social justice, human rights, and the advancement of women and girls.Through her work, she has become a highly respected and influential figure both in South Africa and internationally.
