Building Futures – Hotel Hope Ministries’ Journey of Transformation and Impact Finalist For the 2025 CSI Legacy Awards

Hotel Hope Ministries, led by Sihle Mooi, stands as a beacon of hope and transformation in Johannesburg’s vulnerable communities. As a finalist in the Best Rising NGO category, the organisation’s journey reflects a commitment to reshaping the lives of abandoned children and creating sustainable solutions for societal challenges. For over 17 years, Hotel Hope has addressed critical issues at the intersection of child abandonment, early education, and youth unemployment, utilising a unique, multi-faceted approach to effect change.

Rooted in Soweto, Sihle Mooi’s passion for community development was inspired by his upbringing and a deep understanding of the hardships faced by many children in South Africa. The organisation’s foundation is built upon the belief that early intervention can significantly alter a child’s trajectory. This ethos is encapsulated in the Zulu saying, Induku igotshwa isemanzi—”it’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Guided by this principle, Hotel Hope has expanded from a single children’s home to five family-style homes that provide love, care, and quality early childhood education to abandoned and orphaned babies.

Hotel Hope’s ecosystem is designed not only to address immediate needs but to create long-term impact. The organisation’s three-pronged approach involves direct child care, preventative measures, and sustainable funding models. Their work begins with nurturing abandoned babies in a family-like environment while also operating an in-house Montessori-based preschool to ensure the children receive a strong educational foundation. The preventative component focuses on supporting teenagers facing crisis pregnancies, aiming to break cycles of abandonment and provide young mothers with alternatives and resources to rebuild their lives.

What sets Hotel Hope apart is its innovative social entrepreneurship model, which sustains approximately 20–30% of its funding. Through secondhand stores, the organisation generates revenue while addressing unemployment, waste reduction, and skills development. This model exemplifies their belief in sustainability and self-reliance, ensuring their mission continues to thrive while creating additional societal value.

Over the years, Hotel Hope has achieved remarkable milestones. It has cared for 206 children, of whom 163 have been adopted into loving families. Their Montessori preschool has grown to accommodate 20 children, offering an early education foundation critical for future success. These achievements highlight the organisation’s unwavering commitment to providing every child with the opportunity to thrive.
