Ronewa Mudau is a survivor of gender-based violence. After a decade of abuse, she escaped the toll GBV took on her health and her children’s well-being. She was left with nothing.
Ronewa and her two sons, aged 12 and 18, have been living in a shack on a piece of land she bought in 2022 in Attridgeville, Pretoria. Their humble home has no formal infrastructure. Their energy sources include gas, solar power, and a single water tap, while their toilet consists of an outdoor long drop.
The transformative moment in Ronewa’s life came when she secured an interest-free loan from the GivenGroup to build a new house.
The introduction to Simphiwe Mtetwa at the GivenGroup came through the CEO of Women of Stature. Negotiations ensued, allowing Ronewa to acquire the necessary materials to complete her new home, a 60-square-meter house featuring three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an open-plan living area and in-house plumbing and electricity. This significant development will elevate their living conditions from shack-dwelling to a beautifully constructed home.
Within two years, Ronewa has managed to turn her life around. Having escaped a difficult marriage in 2020, she took deliberate steps in 2022 to improve her living environment. Now, she enjoys a life of peace and independence, free from external control.
Expressing her gratitude, Ronewa acknowledges that the GivenGroup’s support is crucial for individuals like her who struggle to access financing from reputable institutions. This financial assistance serves as a vital stepping stone for many South Africans seeking to break free from the cycle of poverty.
In addition to building her new home, Ronewa runs Fixing a Sister’s Crown, an NGO, and Livron Enterprises, a cleaning company, both operated from her home.
Ronewa established Fixing a Sister’s Crown in 2023, providing help, resources and a haven for women in similar situations, empowering survivors and breaking the cycle of abuse. FaSC ensures that no one feels alone or trapped.
