The Soul City Institute for Social Justice was founded in 1992 as a multimedia health promotion project focused on HIV and AIDS. However, in response to the high levels of GBV in South Africa, the organization expanded its focus to include GBV prevention and response programs.
One of the key programs that the organization has implemented is the Soul Buddyz Club. This program was developed to empower children between the ages of 8 and 12 to understand and challenge the social norms and attitudes that contribute to GBV. The program uses a range of fun and engaging activities to teach children about gender equality, healthy relationships, and the importance of consent.
Another program that the Soul City Institute has implemented is the Soul City Young Women’s Network. This program provides a platform for young women to come together to discuss issues related to GBV and to take action to address these issues in their communities. The program also provides training and support to young women who want to become advocates for GBV prevention and response.
The organization has also developed a range of educational resources on GBV, including a television drama series, radio shows, and educational materials for schools. These resources are designed to raise awareness of GBV and to challenge the attitudes and beliefs that contribute to it.
In addition to these programs and resources, the Soul City Institute has also worked with a range of partners to advocate for policy changes related to GBV. The organization has been involved in a number of campaigns to strengthen laws related to GBV, including the Domestic Violence Act and the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act.
The Soul City Institute has also worked to improve access to services for survivors of GBV. The organization has partnered with a range of organizations to provide counseling, legal support, and other services to survivors of GBV. In addition, the organization has developed a range of tools and resources to support service providers who work with survivors of GBV.
In conclusion, the Soul City Institute for Social Justice has been at the forefront of efforts to address GBV in South Africa. Through its range of programs and initiatives, the organization has worked to raise awareness of GBV, challenge the social norms and attitudes that contribute to it, and provide support to survivors of GBV. While there is still much work to be done, the Soul City Institute has made a significant contribution to the fight against GBV in South Africa.
