As the year draws to a close, I’m excited to share the State of the Industry review—an initiative I’ve been working on for some time. This project reflects on and celebrates the future of Corporate Social Investment (CSI) in South Africa. It brings together the insightful conversations, interviews, and partnerships I’ve had the privilege of being part of with some of the country’s most influential leaders and organisations.
In 2024 alone, I’ve had enriching discussions with notable figures such as Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, former Executive Director of the United Nations and South Africa’s ex-Deputy President, the Commissioner for the National Lotteries Commission, and the heads of the three largest banks. I’ve collaborated with state-owned enterprises and engaged with one of South Africa’s top research institutions. Talked to PHD professors and graduates. Additionally, I’ve worked alongside leaders in the NGO sector, who together manage a budget of nearly ZAR 2 billion.
These experiences have shown me the value of sharing ideas and working together to create a brighter future. That’s why, each year, I’ll be compiling these discussions and reflections into the State of the Industry review—my take on the key issues shaping the future of CSI.
Through platforms such as our podcast, digital dialogues, awards, conferences, and magazines, I’ve been able to showcase some of the most impactful CSI programmes and projects. Many of these initiatives are underfunded and deserve greater recognition. By sharing their narratives, my aim has always been to garner the support they need to thrive and foster lasting change.
The State of the Industry review represents the culmination of these efforts. It consolidates the knowledge, insights, and lessons I’ve gathered throughout the year into a single, comprehensive resource. The review will provide an in-depth exploration of the trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping CSI in South Africa. While the inaugural issue is set to launch in March 2025, subsequent editions will be released each November, coinciding with the legacy conference season, making it a timely resource for reflection and planning. I see this as more than just a report—it’s a platform for fostering meaningful conversations and driving actionable change.
The first issue will feature five enlightening articles, case studies, and expert insights from leaders across various industries. My hope is that it will ignite fresh ideas, encourage collaboration, and outline a roadmap for the CSI sector as we move forward.
As we look towards 2025, following the significant milestone of celebrating 30 years of democracy in South Africa, I can’t help but reflect on our progress and the path that lies ahead. We are dubbing 2025 The Year of Numbers, as it’s essential to assess where we stand and chart our course for the next 25 years. This review will serve as a benchmark for that process, helping us evaluate the impact of CSI initiatives and identify solutions to pressing challenges such as unemployment, inequality, and poverty.
I invite anyone passionate about making a real difference in CSI to join us on this journey. If you or your organisation possess insights, case studies, or innovative solutions to contribute, please review our current State of the Industry briefing document to see if your work aligns with our focus. Your contributions could play a crucial role in shaping the first issue and ensuring that the State of the Industry review becomes an essential resource for our sector.
Finally, as we prepare for the festive season, I would like to thank everyone who has supported us and been part of this journey. Your trust and collaboration have made all our achievements this year possible. I eagerly look forward to seeing many of you at the 2025 CSI Legacy Awards on 27 February in Rosebank, Johannesburg, as we continue to build on this momentum.
Wishing you a joyful festive season and a prosperous New Year!
